Fort Amherst

Sadly it’s been a while since I’ve been able to go to Fort Amherst or any venue for ghost hunting, but one place that will always be a personal favourite is Fort Amherst.

I’ve been to this fort in Chatham, Kent countless times for ghost hunts, ghost walks and even escape rooms and I will always be drawn to it.

I thought it was time I wrote a post detailing some of the strange things that have happened to me here – I’ve already shared the photographs on different posts, but here are some of the strangest things I’ve experienced there.

One of the very first times I did a serious investigation at Fort Amherst, I remember scaring myself. We were sat on some stairs in the tunnels and the group leaders asked us to concentrate and to say any names that came to us and to speak up. The first name that came to me was Jeffrey. I don’t know why I thought of that name and I have no connection to that name…but I just said it. To my amazement it was confirmed that Jeffrey Amherst had a strong connection to the tunnels. I don’t know if I knew that already or how I knew it but I just did. However this information came to me I’m truly fascinated and keen to explore further.

Down in the main tunnels, I was with a group but suddenly me and two others smelt something. It was a floral smell and we left the group to try and work out where it was coming from. I was sure there was another explanation – perhaps some air freshener. But after walking through the tunnel there was no explanation. When we got to the end of the tunnel the smell changed – it was suddenly a foul smell and the atmosphere changed. This was the first and last time I had experienced a spirit in this way and hope I can experience this again or come up with another explanation.

Finally, I’m going to write about my experiences in The Gatehouse. One night I was left alone in one of the rooms in The Gatehouse and I sat on a bench. The rest of the group were in the room next door. To my amazement the bench I was on moved from under me and was suddenly on the floor. Thankfully I managed to catch myself before I fell but I was left completely shaken. I just couldn’t and still can’t think of any logical explanation for this to happen.

I know for anyone reading this you must be skeptical about what I’m writing and believe me, I would be too if I hadn’t experienced them myself. All I can say is that these are my experiences – I don’t have any explanation for them which is why they are unexplained. I hope that I get to go back to this fascinating place one day soon and experience more of the same!
